The author of this exhibition is Urve Tõnnus. She is an Estonian designer who has worked with graphic design for over 40 years. She has created logos, corporate styles and homepages for many well-known enterprises and institutions. She is a member of the Estonian Association of Designers (EAD). During the last 10 years, she has focused on collage painting.

She describes her art:

“I create archetypes of women who have been outstanding in history or who have influenced the world. The name of this exhibition – Women Who Run with the Wolves – is borrowed from a book written by Ph.D., Jungian analyst and cantadora storyteller Clarissa Pinkole Estés.”

Dr. Estés has created a new lexicon for describing the female psyche. Fertile and life-giving, it is a psychology of women in the truest sense, a knowing of the soul.

Within every woman there lives a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing. She is the Wild Woman, who represents the instinctual nature of women. In Women Who Run with the Wolves, Dr. Estés unfolds rich intercultural myths, fairy tales, folk tales, and stories, in order to help women reconnect with the fierce, healthy, and visionary attributes of this instinctual nature.

Urve Tõnnus emphasizes that feminine love and consideration is  a quite special power that can also beat a very aggressive antagonist. “Our history consists of men’s brutal wars, acts and performances, but women’s performances have been quite hidden. At first, we should understand ourselves. We should be brave. We should awake our internal powers, beauty and erudition, to bring back peace and harmony to the world. We should not hurt nature. We have to respect and love our planet Earth.

Some of my paintings are inspired by places where I have had the luck to be. These places are distinctive archetypes that may be destroyed if we continue in the same way as up to now.

For me, art is a form of being. I believe that consciousness is a source of being.  We live with a common consciousness and learn every day how to keep in touch with it. ”

Urve Tõnnus has participated in many exhibitions in Tallinn, Helsinki, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Zürich and London. Maybe the most important of them have been the Armory Art Week (New York), Parallax Art Fair (London), Swissartexpo (Zürich) and Art Basel Art Week (Miami).

In 2016, Urve Tõnnus had her personal exhibition in Art Gallery Piirto in Helsinki, and she participated also in the group exhibition “Joy from Art”. In 2019, she was nominated for the Italian design award (A Design Award) with her painting Cleopatra.
